Who wouldn’t want to learn how to get rid of scars for good? Getting a pimple, or a cut always brings about the same question – will that turn into a scar? It happens so easily – a small scratch can turn into a ‘nice’ little scar before you know it. Sometimes you can prevent scarring from occurring, but more often than not, you are tasked with trying to reduce the visibility of a scar. If you’ve ever wondered how to get rid of scars, here are five tried and true remedies:

  1. Oils
Lavender oil and Aloe Vera oil have long been considered therapeutic oils for the skin. Cocoa butter can also aid in skincare and also serves to moisturize the skin. These oils work best when the scar is relatively new.
  2. Food remedies
Yes,… food! I bet you didn’t see that one coming. Many of the seasonings and foods we eat have medicinal properties. There are several food items that can assist in getting rid of scars, such as: onion, lemon, and raw honey. These work to reduce the collagen produced by the scar. This, in turn, makes the scar appear lighter.
  3. Vitamin E oil
Vitamin E is a controversial remedy but many still extol the values of using it on new scars. Massage it into the scar tissue on a regular basis for best results.
  4. Sunscreen
Using sunscreen on a scar every morning, before you dash out the door, helps to protect it from getting darker (post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation). Especially if you live in a sunny, warmer climate. This hyperpigmentation is caused by excess production of melanin, which can cause the dark spots that appear after a pimple. (Even if you did not touch it during the inflammatory process) But it does not necessarily always apply to dark skin. Use a sunscreen that moisturizes and contains zinc to protect against UV rays. SPF 20 and above would be ideal, but it depends on the skintone you have.
  5. Medical processes
Medical processes such as dermabrasion and surgical scar revision are possible methods of getting rid of scars. These processes don’t always work and they do depend on the type of scar you have. There are four types of scars (keloid, contracture, hypertropic, and acne) and the scar removal processes don’t work on all of them. Always first consult with a dermatologist to have (keloid) scars surgically removed. For example, if your scar is keloid in nature, meaning it extends beyond the original injury and is a raised scar on darker skin, dermabrasion will be less effective. Find out if for example a surgical procedure might work with your type of scarring.

Sometimes you just can’t prevent getting a scar, but there are some things you can do to try to reduce their appearance. Try these remedies and determine what is best for your skin. The above meantioned list is, however, not definite. We therefor advise you to always visit a dermatologist for more in depth medical information about your personal skincare in case of scars. There are several ways to get rid of dark spots and scars. Some of them are also meantioned by the young and successfull beauty vlogger Destiny Chantapheuy. Among other products, she uses Liquid Neutrogena (the fragrance free facial cleansing formula) and Cetiphil.
