Where To Get Affordable Natural Hair Products

I was strolling through a busy shopping center in my area last week. I happened to find myself in Macy’s in hopes of finding a sale on some hair care products.

To my surprise, Mrs. Lisa Price, founder of Carol’s Daughter, pulled her line from Macy’s. Apparently, she parted ways with Macy’s back when Carol’s Daughter Stores (not the entire company) were filling for bankruptcy.

The friendly Macy’s associate said I might find her line at Target, which was a hop, skip and a jump away. So I gaited across the street to the nearby Target to see what I could find.

To my surprise, in the health and beauty section of the store, was Carol’s Daughter products. Tons of them!

And more importantly, they were CHEAP!

Purchasing Carol’s Daughter from Macy’s or Ulta would have equated to having gas money for the rest of the week or moisturized tresses! But at Target, the most expensive item I saw was Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Hair Smoothie for $14.00. A quick look on ulta.com shows the average Carol’s Daughter product costs more than $20!

While I did not have an immediate use for the Carol’s Daughter products (I’m more of a Shea Moisture gal myself) I could not help but notice the array of several natural, black owned, AFFORDABLE natural hair products in Target.

I love that Target dedicates an entire aisle (or two) to the needs of curly and kinky hair textures. For example, I found many other Shea Moisture bath and body products in the next aisle, including their line for men!

Here is a list of top natural hair products in Target for affordable prices (FYI: photos were taken in a Target location in Hampton Roads, Va.)

  1. Carol’s Daughter: Carol’s Daughter products range from haircare to skincare to bodycare. Lisa Price, the founder of Carol’s Daughter, got her start in the natural haircare business making handmade hair products from her kitchen and selling them.  Some of her more popular products include her Black Vanilla Hair Oil ($10) and Hair Smoothies ($14).

  1. Shea Moisture: Shea Moisture has been in the making since the early 1900s in Sierra Leone. Sofi Tucker, the matriarch behind Shea Moisture, sold shea nuts across Africa. Her vision soon turned into shea butter, shea soap and other shea based products. Shea Moisture is my favorite natural hair product because of their extreme reliance on truly all natural products. The very few chemicals found in Shea Moisture products are deemed harmless. Shea Moisture even has a line dedicated to children’s hair too. Target.com lists the cheapest Shea Moisture hair product for $3.99!

  1. Curls: Curls.biz was founded in 2002 in California. This line is specially designed for natural curly hair ranging for black hair texture to multi-racial and curly Caucasian hair texture. While affordable, I don’t much care for the lack of products available in Target for Curls and that a few of them are little more than what I want to pay for. However; you can find far more affordable Curls products on their website.

  1. Jane Carter Solution: Founder Jane Carter’s entire career has always been in hair care. She was part of Clairol’s  and Avalon Affirm styling teams in the late 1980s. She started her own haircare line in 1992 and has seen success ever  since! She has designed her natural haircare line to be helpful for all types of hair, natural or not. Great reviews aside; however, some of Jane Carter Solution products tend to reach too far in my pockets!

  1. Taliah Waajid: Also called “Black Earth Products,” Taliah Waadij is sold at all major grocery stores, including Target. This is one of the most popular lines for natural haircare. In fact, it is a constant vendor at major black hair expos. Taliah Waajid has some of the best prices for their products in Target as you can see.

  • I saw some Carol’s Daughter products at Target yesterday and was surprised. I’m still getting used to what’s considered a good price for different products though.
