How To Do The Perfect Silk Wrap

Yes, women still demand the silk wrap in salons. It is one of the best ways to get bone-straight hair without the demanding heat of a Dominican blowout or the aches and pains of a classic hot press with a hot comb.

A silk wrap is a way to not only get your hair very straight, but this type of wrap makes is sleek, bouncy and voluminous.

Some have contributed their hair for staying straight for several days or even a couple weeks because of a well done silk wrap.

There are some downsides to getting a silk wrap. It’s like any other straightening technique: too much of it is a bad thing. Recurring silk wraps means recurring heat and we all know that is a no-no in the natural hair world.

In fact, I would go so far as to say consider a silk wrap ONLY if you know exactly how your hair reacts to a lot of heat at once. Meaning if you’re hair breaks very easily after using heat, you may want to refrain from this style or get it done by a trusted hair dresser.

The good news that a beautiful silk wrap can be done on any and all natural hair; from the straightest of straight to the kinkiest of curly.

The main tools you will need for a silk wrap include:

  • Good shampoo and conditioner
  • Heat protectant
  • Blow dryer
  • Hair dryer (that you sit under)
  • Flat iron
  • Wide tooth comb
  • Blow dryer brush
  • plastic wrap

The basic steps of a silk wrap include a good shampoo and conditioning (deep condition if at all possible.)

When conditioning, if you can sit under a hair dryer for a deeper condition. If not allow to allow dry or blow with your blower dryer for 10 minutes. And then rinse.

Comb your hair with the wide tooth comb and section. You may want to use a moisturizer to make it comb through easier and this gives it time to set in your hair. This will also be a good time to put a little heat protectant in your hair too.

Once your hair is completely combed through, blow dry on medium heat using your blow dryer brush to straighten and dry your hair out simultaneously.

Once your hair is completely dry, begin to flat iron. Make sure the heat is not over 375 degrees.

When flat ironing, also make sure to use the chase method. And focus on getting the roots as flat as possible.

When done completely wrap your hair in plastic wrap. You may want to reapply a bit of moisturizer or leave-in conditioner.
