The Big Chop

A Major Cut

which is most often referred to as The “Big Chop” is one way to swiftly transition from relaxed

to natural hair. This involves cutting all relaxed hair from the head in one setting. This is

considered a “fast” but “bold” move. The reason this is labeled “bold” is depending on how long

the new growth is.  Thus, a Big Chop can result in hair as short as a low fade or slightly longer.

Big Chopping is best and recommended for those who want to become completely natural

immediately and do not want to deal with handling relaxed and natural textures together. It is

important to keep in mind before chopping that the straight, relaxed length of hair, while still

attached will stretch the new growth so that it appears longer and often wavier. However, when

the straight hair is removed, the new growth often curls up and constricts tighter against the

scalp, making the remaining natural hair appear shorter than anticipated. Shrinkage of this

nature is normal, and is characteristic of kinky, coiled natural hair.

A Big Chop often brings out the beauty of our facial features, while hair often hides it. Utilize this

time enhance your eyes, lips and cheekbones. Accessories, such as earrings may become

indispensible to you after a major chop. The right pair of earrings can add glam and pizzazz and

style to any short look.

I’ve been thinking about it for a while now. I’m transitioning now. It has been about 5 months so really I’m just starting. But I’m tired of the two textures!!!

I stop relaxing my hair about 15 months ago and I’m happy with how my hair has recovered and grown from the damage it had taken from relaxing…I have a great curl pattern but I’ve noticed that the women who’ve done “the Big Chop” seem to have a really thick and slick definition to their hair that I don’t have… I was wondering if it’s just the grade and texture of their hair or is it the fact they cut their hair or just as time passes it developed that way? Thanks!
